It relies on micropores on the membrane surface to retain suspended solids, colloids, macromolecular organics, and microorganisms, keeping permeate turbidity and SDI stably controlled. It is often used as a pre-barrier for reverse osmosis and nanofiltration systems.

Separation Principle

It is mainly based on membrane pore size screening. Pressure on the feed side drives water and small-molecule solutes through the membrane pores, while components larger than the pore size are retained and discharged with the concentrate.

It is a physical separation process at ambient temperature without phase change; it does not introduce chemical reaction agents or change the basic chemical form of the material.

Membrane fouling is mainly controlled through periodic air-water backwash, chemically enhanced backwash (CEB), and chemical cleaning (CIP).

Product Features

Permeate quality is stable, and effluent turbidity and SDI are controlled, significantly extending the operating cycles of downstream reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes.

Hollow fiber, tubular, flat sheet, and multi-leaf configurations are available to suit feed liquids with different solids content and viscosity.

Pressure-resistant and chemical-cleaning-resistant PVDF and PES materials can withstand more frequent backwash and chemical cleaning.

Relatively compact footprint and high degree of automation; can operate in coordination with pretreatment and reverse osmosis systems.

Application Industries

Pretreatment for purification and reuse of surface water, groundwater, and municipal reclaimed water.

Guard filtration ahead of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration systems, replacing conventional multi-media filtration.

Reuse of industrial wastewater from electroplating, printing and dyeing, and papermaking, and side-stream filtration of circulating cooling water.

Clarification, microbial removal, and separation of process liquids in food and beverage, fermentation, and pharmaceutical applications.

Specifications and Models

Parameter

Unit

Typical value

Molecular weight cutoff

Da

1000–500000 (typical value)

Membrane material

—

PVDF / PES / ceramic

Operating pressure

MPa

0.05–0.30 (typical value)

Product water turbidity

NTU

≤ 0.1 (typical)

Effluent SDI₁₅

—

≤ 3 (typical)

Operating temperature

℃

5–40 (typical)

Applicable pH range

—

2–11 (typical, depending on material)

The data in the table are common ranges for similar equipment and are for selection reference only;
